Shift work can be brutal, but it doesn't have to be. Welcome to a healthy shift. My name is Roger Sutherland, certified nutritionist, veteran law enforcement officer, and 24-7 shift worker for almost four decades. Through this podcast, I aim to educate shift workers using evidence-based methods to not only survive the rigors of shift work, but thrive. My goal is to empower shift workers to improve their health and well-being so they have more energy to do the things they love. Enjoy today's show. And welcome to another episode of a healthy shift podcast. My name, Roger Sutherland, and I am your guide on this shift working journey. Now, today's a bit different. I want to actually talk about an event that I've been humbled and absolutely thrilled to talk about in during. And it is going to be a night shift summit. And it's free. But I just want to talk to you about this because it's something that doesn't come around often. And if you're a shift worker or if you lead shift workers, then this summit is really going to matter. It's a global night shift summit. And it's happening to mark what is known as National Third Shift Day in the USA. Now, this is a day that's actually gazetted and dedicated to recognizing night shift workers. And to be honest, that doesn't happen nearly enough. You know it, I know it. If you're a night shift worker, you deserve all the recognition that you can get. So this event exists to actually change that. It's to put proper attention on what Night Shift really does to people, and more importantly, what there is that you can do to navigate it. And here's a part that I really want you to understand straight away. This summit is a hundred percent free. No cost, no catch. And you can register, you can attend, and you can get access to all of the information around it without paying a single cent. Now, I've been involved in getting this off the ground. And then I was asked to speak at it, and I was absolutely thrilled because one of the main goals that I have, one of my primary values and objectives is to get as much education to the shift worker as I can. And one of the biggest areas that shift workers really struggle in is the night shift. And the fact that they've got a national third shift day in the USA, and that we've got this event on National Third Shift Day to market is significant. And I'm absolutely thrilled to be invited to speak about it. And I'll talk more about that very shortly. Now, the timing of this event has been set up extremely well for you, the shift worker. What we've done is we've chosen a time which works in both the USA and also here in um Eastern Standard Time Australia. The event is going to run at 8 p.m. Eastern Time in the US. And what this does is it actually lines up with 10 a.m. Australian Eastern Standard Time. So during business hours, and this is important because if you are a leader or a HR manager or you manage 24-7 staff, you can have this running in the background and sort of keep an ear on it while you're actually working during the day. And if you're in the USA, it'll be actually after hours at 8 p.m. So whether you're in the US heading into your night or you're here in Australia and you are during the day as a manager or leader, or you've finished your niggas, you can actually attend this live without it being a disruption. You're not like you're getting up at three o'clock in the morning pretending you're on a night shift to actually watch it. And if you can't make it live or your roster gets in the way, guess what? You guessed it. There will be a replay available for you. So there is literally no reason to actually miss the content of this event. Now, as I said to you before, I'm absolutely humbled and thrilled to be speaking at this event. And I am really excited and generally looking forward to it. We've been involved in meetings, and the other people who are speaking are next level incredible. But what am I going to talk about? Well, I'm going to start positioning myself as a night shift expert, as something that I believe is one of the biggest gaps that we have in shift work. Because if I said to you, what do you struggle with in shift work the most? There's two things that people always say to me. One's night shift, the other one's sleep. So, how to actually go into a night shift, get through it, and come out of it properly. That's going to be me. This is what I'm going to talk about. What is the optimal way to go into the night shift, get through it, and come out of it properly? Not just survive it, not just pushing through the fatigue, but how do we structure it in a way that your body can actually handle it? Because most people aren't struggling with night shift because they're weak. What they're doing is they're actually struggling with it because they've never been shown actually how to do it properly. Now, this is the thing. There is research, and researchers will tell you one thing. And then there's lived experience, and lived experience tells you something as well. And what I've positioned myself is the conduit between the research and lived experience. What this means is I can look at the research and what it tells us and actually apply it into a real life lived situation. Now, I have my own theories and my own hypothesis on how I think we should be going into, going through and coming out a night shift optimally. And it goes against a lot of research. But I have coached hundreds of shift workers, and they're all using my method of going into, going through and coming out a night shift, and every single one of them have all come back to me and said to me, I cannot believe the difference that this makes. I'm actually getting to days off and enjoying my days off, and I'm having an absolute ball with them because I'm not just crawling from one bed to the next to the couch to back to bed to, and I've got brain fog. I'm actually getting going and really enjoying my days off. So, what will I be breaking down? Well, before the shift, what should you do to prepare your body? How can you prepare to go into the night shift? During the shift, how to stay alert, stable, and not crash halfway through it? How do we go between the shifts, like between those nights, if you are someone who does a few nights in a row, how can you actually, what's the optimal way of going through it? And um, after the shift, how do after we finish night shift, how do we recover properly so we're not carrying the fatigue into all of our rest days? Now, I'm not the only one speaking at this event, but I'm super excited about my topic. This is where it gets even stronger when you look at the lineup of people and the knowledge that is going to come from these people. You've got Dr. Olivia Walsh, who's become a friend of mine, and we've put her first to explain the circadian rhythm. And if you know Olivia, the way she explains things is phenomenal. I've had Olivia on the podcast myself, and if you search A Healthy Shift and Dr. Olivia Walsh, you'll find the podcast there. She's been on a few times, and she has a really amazing way of actually explaining the circadian rhythm. So this will help you to understand what your body clock is doing and why night shift feels actually the way that it does. Then I will be speaking about the night shift. And then you will have Dr. Chen Yalora, and she will be covering the impact that night shift has on mental health. Because it isn't just physical fatigue, there is literally a psychological load that comes with working nights as well. And this circadian disruption or desynchronization does have an impact on our mental health. And because it's going to be mental health week in the USA as well, Dr. Yolora is actually going to be speaking on that topic as well. And then you've got a favorite of mine, which is Dr. Charlotte Gupta, and she's going to be talking about nutrition for night shift workers. This is her passion. This is the area that she's working in. Now, she's from the University of Central Queensland, and she's based out of Adelaide, and this is her passion. She actually works in this area, what to eat and when to eat, and how this affects your energy and recovery. How good's that? So we're going to learn about mental health, we're going to learn about nutrition timing, we're going to learn about what the circadian rhythm is and how to go into through and out of night shift. Those are great topics. And then we've got Sean from Night Owling, and Sean is actually the one that's started this, and Sean and I have worked on it. And it's he's from Night Owling, and what he's going to do is he is going to talk about and cover employer infrastructure. What should organizations actually be doing to support people working in 24-7 environments? Because this isn't just on the individual, there's systems to piece into this as well. Now, when you put all this together, here's the full picture for you. We're discussing circadian rhythms and sleep and mental health and nutrition and workplace systems and practical strategies that you can actually apply going into through and out of night shift. Is that not incredible? And again, this is all for free. Now that's the part that I don't want you to overlook because normally to get access to this level of information, you're going to pay for it somewhere. But here, you are absolutely not. And there is no hidden catch here. You can tune in, listen to whoever you want to speak about whatever topic, tune out, stay for the lot. The whole event will go for two hours. Each speaker is only speaking for 15 minutes. So it's not going to become great long science-y lectures. It's just going to be in and out with snapshots of practical takeaways that you can actually learn and take away and implement straight away. And of course, you get the replay, you can re-watch so that it really sticks in. This is absolutely worth your time. So if you're someone who works night shift or you rotate through shifts, or you lead a team that does, I really highly recommend that you attend this or at least register for it and watch the replay. Because even if you just take one or maybe even two things from it and then you apply them properly, it can literally change how you handle or write your roster. So here's what I really want you to do for this. Don't miss it. In the show notes is a link. Go and have a look at the landing page for the event and instantly register your spot. All we need is your name and your email address and lock it in. That way, all the information around it will be sent to you. The links will be sent to you, the replay will be sent to you. Everything you need, you will get for free. That's right. No cost at any stage. So lock it in. If you can attend live, absolutely fantastic. I'm really looking forward to seeing you. I did fail to mention, or I forgot to mention to you as well. At the end, we'll be just like a fireside chat with the five of us. So what you can do is you can tune in and hear us asking each other questions, or you get the opportunity to actually ask questions yourself. If you've got a specific question and it's a simple one to answer, you will get your opportunity. Lock it in, folks. If you can attend live, fantastic. If you can't, you're gonna get a replay anyway. But please don't leave it and forget about it. This is a really important seminar, and we've put together really pertinent speakers to talk about these particular topics, and they are really important topics. Remember this. This is one of those opportunities that actually lines up with what you're dealing with right now. Night Shift isn't going anywhere, but how you handle it can actually change. It's all about education, and these are just snapshot 15-minute lectures that will really help you. So go and register. Link in the show notes. I'm looking forward to seeing you there.
