Shift work gets brushed off as “part of the job”… but no one actually teaches you how to handle it.
So most people end up guessing. Trying different foods, routines, supplements, or just copying coworkers who feel just as wrecked.
In this episode, we talk about why that keeps you stuck, and what it looks like to actually have something that works for your life and your roster.
We get into why days off can feel worse than work days, how shift habits can lead to weight gain and brain fog, and the kind of questions people always ask, ike eating at 3am, sleeping during the day, when to train, and what supplements actually matter.
We also touch on chrononutrition and what changes when you stop fighting your body and start working with it.
If you want help applying this to your own schedule, you can book a one-off session at ahealthyshift.com.
If this helped, follow the podcast and leave a review. It really helps more shift workers find it.

SPEAKER_00Shift work can be brutal, but it doesn't have to be. Welcome to a healthy shift. My name is Roger Sutherland, certified nutritionist, veteran law enforcement officer, and 24-7 shift worker for almost four decades. Through this podcast, I aim to educate shift workers using evidence-based methods to not only survive the rigors of shift work, but thrive. My goal is to empower shift workers to improve their health and well-being so they have more energy to do the things they love. Enjoy today's show. And welcome back to another episode of a healthy shift podcast. I am absolutely thrilled to have you on board. Welcome. I'm your guide on shift work, and shift workers is what I do. Every single day I am talking to shift workers, nurses, police officers, paramedics, fly-in, fly out miners. And there's one thing that continually keeps coming up. Most of you all feel like you're guessing. And you know what's disappointing about this to me in a really big way is it shows the lack of education that's given to people when they start in a shift working environment. Most of you are all learning from either other colleagues or you're bumbling your way through it yourself. You're guessing when should you eat? What should you eat? You're guessing when to sleep, how you should sleep. You're guessing if that supplement you bought is actually doing anything, as promised, or if it's just expensive neon colored urine. And look, I know that for a lot of you, the idea of committing to a 12-week coaching program feels like just another job on your to-do list. You know, you've got life. You've got kids that are at school, you've got a partner who doesn't work shift work, and you're trying to balance your life. Your roster and life is already a jigsaw puzzle, and you're trying to fit it all together. And adding a three-month commitment and a weekly check-in with me can actually feel quite overwhelming. I would argue that it's actually one of the best investments that you will ever make. And I have hundreds of clients that would actually testify that it is, and it was, one of the best ever that's made such a difference to their life. But not everyone can commit to that. Or not everyone actually needs that. And I understand it. Not everyone needs or even wants a long-term coach. But here is the truth. Pretty much every single person working a 24-7 roster has questions that they need answers to right now. They need answers from someone who gets it, someone who's walked in your shoes, someone who's studied it, someone who's learned about it, someone who actually has the answers for you that will make a difference. Now, when you start shift work, you are not given a manual. You're given a uniform, you're given a roster, and you learn how to survive by watching the person next to you or trial and error. But if the person next to you is living on energy drinks and damn Jenny and that cake, and they've been exhausted for 10 years, why are you taking their advice? Like honestly, think about it. Have a look at them. Why would you be taking their advice? Now that colleague advice is usually what is leading to that weight gain, the brain fog, and that feeling of being a goddamn zombie in your entire days off. Now, I'll be clear, I spent 40 years on the in the job, 40 years of 24-7 shift work, and I've bounced out of it really well because I learned over the last six or seven years of shift work how to optimize it, and I wish I had me going back when I started. It makes no sense to me that people don't get education around shift work. Now, what brings on this weight gain? Why do we suffer from the brain fog? And why do we feel so ordinary on days off and just crawl from one shift to the next? It leaves you wondering, doesn't it? You don't know what day of the week it is, you don't know what time in the day it is, you're dreading having to go in for the next shift, you haven't got time to scratch yourself, and yet here you are back at work again. Now, I absolutely love helping shift workers. It is why I do this, but I've realized that there's no point in me giving you 12 weeks of information that you might not need. When what you actually want are the answers to the specific problems that you are having today. This is why I am thrilled to announce that I've opened up one-to-one one-off sessions. Now, this can be a 60-minute opportunity for you to ask me questions to deep dive into your life. Not a generic textbook routine where what we do is you ask me the questions that you need the answers to. All you gotta do is ask the questions. You book your session, I send you a form, you lay it all out, you ask me the questions, I will optimize the answers ready for you to make the most of your 60-minute session, and then we will go from there. Maybe you want to know what to eat at 3 a.m. so you don't crash at 5. Maybe you need to know how to trigger that deep sleep when the sun is up and the house is noisy. Maybe you're tired of the gym being a struggle because you're just too exhausted to train. When should you train? What should you do? What supplements do work? What supplements should you be taking? What is a really good exercise to do? When should you sleep? When should you eat? There's a hundred different questions. It's no good me putting you into a program that doesn't fit you. I give you the opportunity to ask the questions and I'll answer them. And you get access to me to ask me anything that you need, whether it could be around women's health, whether it could be around body image, whether it could be around um sleep, whether it could be around what to eat or when. There can be heaps of things that you can ask about. I've been educated in a lot of areas and I can help you. So whatever your question is, or whatever your questions are, this is your chance to ask someone who's walked in your shoes and gets it. You bring the challenges, and I'll bring you the pro I'll provide you with practical, evidence-based strategies to solve them. Think of this as just a quick in and out, no long-term contract, no strings, up to 60 minutes or longer, pro radar, just 60 minutes of direct relevant advice for you. Not what I think you need, just answers to your questions. And you can literally start using those from the second you hang up from me. Or finish up in the Zoom meeting. Now I've seen what happens when a shift worker moves from guessing what to do to actually knowing and having a strategy. I've had police officers tell me that they finally reconnected with their families for days off because they aren't spent flopped on the couch in a fog. I've had nurses tell me that they finally stopped the weight creep because they finally understand chrononutrition, which is how your body interacts with your biological clock and nutrient timing. When you stop fighting your biology and start working with it, everything changes. You might think it's simple. It is, but you just got to know what it is that you've got to do. Your energy starts to stabilize, your mood will improve. You actually start to enjoy the lifestyle that Shift Work provides you rather than just surviving it. Now there's no point in me giving you a mountain of information that we just never ever, you'll never use. Or having you troll through books or listen to hundreds of podcasts. Just book a session, have me for the hour, send me the questions that you want answered, I'll optimize the answers to make sure that we make the absolute most of the time, and you get the answers that you need. The exact answers that you need. And then we can help you to get back to self-regulating your shift work life so that you can start enjoying it. So if you're ready to stop the trial and error, let's talk. It doesn't matter where you are in the world, I can help you. Because it's done online. Now I'm offering these limited one-to-one one-off sessions for those who want the answers without the 12-week commitment. So to learn more about this or to book your session, what I want you to do is go into the show notes and click the link for the one-to-one shift work consultation or one-to-one coaching and pick a time that works for you. Whatever time's available there, I'm available for you. And then what will happen is you will receive a form that you complete and you get the opportunity to ask those questions. I will then know what questions you're going to ask so that I am prepared to give you the right answers to maximize the time. If we don't use up the full hour, I will refund you pro rudder. Or we just use the timer with any questions that you may have around anything. And if we go over the time because you need more time and I've got the time, then I will charge you pro rudder over the top of that. It's pretty simple, really, but we allocate an hour. I'm Roger. I've been where you are. And I am here to help you to actually navigate that. I want to educate you. I want to help you. Come on, you've got answers. I know you do. Questions, I know you do. What you need is the answers. Simple. Even if it's supplements, even if it's to prevent weight gain, whatever, I'll help you. I'm going to see you in the session, and I'm really looking forward to meeting you. Thank you for listening.
