A Healthy Shift | The Shift Work Podcast
It doesn't have to be this way.
Welcome to A Healthy Shift | The Shift Work Podcast, the podcast helping shift workers thrive while changing how organisations think about people working in 24/7 environments.
Hosted by Roger Sutherland, Australia's Night Shift & Sleep Specialist, this is where evidence meets lived experience.
After more than 40 years of working rotating shifts with Victoria Police, followed by years studying nutrition, circadian biology, chrononutrition, sleep, human performance and women's health, Roger is on a mission to challenge the belief that fatigue, poor sleep, burnout and declining health are simply part of working shifts.
Because they don't have to be.
Whether you're a nurse, paramedic, police officer, firefighter, doctor, aged care worker, manufacturing employee, FIFO worker, miner, pilot, flight attendant, truck driver, dispatcher, or anyone working outside the traditional 9-to-5, this podcast will give you practical, evidence-based strategies to help you sleep better, improve your energy, optimise your health and perform at your best.
If you're a leader, manager, People & Culture professional, WHS specialist, or responsible for leading a 24/7 workforce, you'll discover a different way of thinking about shift work—one that focuses on building shift work capability from within through education, leadership and practical systems that create healthier people, stronger teams and higher-performing organisations.
Each episode explores topics including:
• Shift work
• Night shift
• Sleep after night shift
• Circadian rhythm
• Fatigue management
• Shift worker health
• Nutrition for shift workers
• Chrononutrition
• Recovery and resilience
• Women's health and shift work
• Leadership in 24/7 organisations
• Human performance
• Workplace wellbeing
• Fatigue risk management
• Building healthier, safer and higher-performing workplaces
This isn't another podcast offering generic health tips.
It's a podcast about changing the future of shift work.
Because healthier people create stronger teams.
Stronger teams build better organisations.
And it all starts by understanding how to work with biology, not against it.
It doesn't have to be this way.

Welcome to another episode of a Healthy Shift podcast . As you know , I run a website , ahealthyshiftcom . I'm also on Instagram at a underscore healthy , underscore shift . I write blogs and put them on the website . But there's one thing that I haven't spoken about , that I really want to talk to you about today , and that is my one-to-one coaching . Yep , I'm a coach .
Speaker 1Shift work can be brutal , but it doesn't have to be . Welcome to a healthy shift . My name is Roger Sutherland , certified Nutritionist , veteran Law Enforcement Officer and 24-7 shift worker for almost four decades . Through this podcast , I aim to educate shift workers , using evidence-based methods , to not only survive the rigours of shift work , but thrive . My goal is to empower shift workers to improve their health and wellbeing so they have more energy to do the things they love . Enjoy today's show more energy to do the things they love . Enjoy today's show and welcome back to a Healthy Shift podcast where I guide you into all things shift work to help you to not just survive your shifts , but to truly thrive .
Speaker 1Now , today , I want to talk to you about something that is extremely close to my heart and that's why I started and that is my one-to-one coaching . Now , over the years , I've had the privilege of working with hundreds of shift workers just like you , who have come to me with a range of challenges and , trust me , I've heard it all . Now let me tell you , as you know , shift work is no walk in the park . In fact , it can feel like a constant battle , especially when you're dealing with the health issues on top of everything else . Now , shift work causes a lot of problems for the human body , and this is because of this circadian misalignment . But this is where I step in and I offer you the guidance that you so desperately needed when you first started shift work , because I understand shift work inside and out , and not just from the outside , looking in , like majority of people do . But I have done 40 years of . I can combine 40 years of experience in working shift work myself . I've seen it all .
Speaker 1I've had clients come to me struggling with conditions like IBS , endometriosis , pcos , pmdd , insomnia , really , really poor body image , people who have tried every single diet that is known to man , people with all sorts of issues that you can't even begin to imagine , and I would never breach people's privacy , but I can tell you that majority of my clients have been female and there's been a whole range of women's health issues as well . Shift work severely impacts on the female body more than it does with males , and I can tell you that shift work only amplifies these challenges that these conditions bring . But here's the thing they're not insurmountable . When you work with me one-to-one , we work together . I don't just throw a meal plan at you and tell you to go and count your calories and macros . I have learned that that stuff just does not work for shift workers and , more importantly , the science tells us that it can create disordered relationships with food and , trust me , I've literally seen how damaging this can be . Instead , I use loose , intuitive eating strategies that fit into your life . That means no tracking . It means no restrictions . We don't do before and after pictures or measurements or even weighing . We just educate on how to listen to your body , identifying your values because I bet you haven't done that and making choices that are aligned with those values and are realistic for you as the shift worker . With those values and are realistic for you as the shift worker , we focus on creating sustainable habits and routines that support your lifestyle , not fight against it .
Speaker 1This is evidence-based and it's not about quick fixes . It's about long-term health and well-being . It is the education that you need , or you needed when you very first started shift work , not what Jenny told you , not what Karen told you . This is what I do . This is what I do . This is about working with someone who totally understands from inside . Now , every week , inside Now , every week , a coach client and I meet up to talk about what's been happening , what roadblocks have you hit , what strategies worked and what didn't . This is not about perfection . It's about progress , because shift work comes with its own set of challenges , and I totally get that . There's fatigue . There's actual time poverty , decision fatigue and , let's face it , when you are working those hours , the last thing you want is more pressure in your life , and that's why I keep it realistic .
Speaker 1Together , you and I , we find ways to navigate around your own unique situation . I'm here to challenge you , but I will never judge you , and ex-clients of mine will tell you they've never , ever , ever , once have ever been judged for anything that they do because the more open and honest and transparent that they are , we can find a way to navigate it , and that's really , really important , because shift work alone is extremely difficult to navigate . And let's be honest , especially when you are facing these challenges without the right support . I walk with my shift workers with my arm around them and as they start to find their way , so I take a step back and watch them , but I'm right there and I'm right within reach of any questions or anything that they want to support them and to help them .
Speaker 1To many shift workers out there are being given the wrong advice , and that is a fact , whether it's about your nutrition , whether it's about your sleep , when to sleep or even just your overall health . And when you don't get the right guidance , biological issues start to creep in , and if they're not addressed ASAP , they can literally spiral out of control , and this is where people totally give up . But that's what I'm here to help you to prevent Now . You don't have to do this alone . You don't need to just survive each shift and hope one day that things will get better or that they will get better once you stop shift work , because that generally isn't what happens because of the amount of damage that's been done .
Speaker 1I honestly and sincerely want to show you how to thrive in your shift working life , and I'm confident that together , you and I can literally make that happen . So if you are struggling right now , or maybe you've been putting off asking for help because you feel like there's just no time . I want you to know that help is right here . Reach out to me using the link that I've put into the show notes and let's have a conversation about how I can help you , just like I've helped hundreds of other shift workers before you . I can pretty much assure you that there is nothing that I haven't heard and haven't helped a client to navigate . What we can do is we can chat about where you're at . We'll look at your home life , your social life and your work life , and then what we'll do is we will work out where you want to be . You can thrive as a shift worker and I'd honestly would love to show you how .
Speaker 1I have hundreds of shift workers out there now that are literally understanding exactly where it was that they were going wrong before , but they just didn't realize until they started putting in these simple habits and simple routines . All right . So there you have it . So thanks for listening .
Speaker 1It's a very , very short episode today because I literally just wanted to cover my coaching today , because I do do the coaching . I'm not just someone who talks on social media , puts out posts , does a podcast , writes blogs and just turns up on the radio . I am actually a one-to-one coach and this is where I get all of my information from , from actually first world coaching with clients , and it's really , really important that I actually do that . So thanks for listening and remember shift work doesn't have to be the thing that holds you back . It can literally be the thing that empowers you to live the life that you deserve . So what I'll do is I will put the link into the show notes . Let's meet up it's obligation free and we can chat .
Speaker 1I'll catch you on the next episode of a Healthy Shift podcast , where we will dive deeper into evidence-based strategies to help shift workers live their best lives . Until then , keep looking after yourself . You deserve that . Thank you for listening . If you enjoyed this episode , be sure to subscribe so you get notified whenever a new episode is released . It would also be ever so helpful if you could leave a rating and review on the app you're currently listening on . If you want to know more about me or work with me , you can go to ahealthyshiftcom . I'll catch you on the next one .
